Nancy Foster Crew

In January 2026, Interior Maintenance Company (IMC) was hired to perform an unusual service… schedule a five-man crew for ten straight days to wet wipe clean every interior surface of a ship in dry dock.

That ship was the NOAA Nancy Foster, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel known for her work in protecting marine environments, linking conservation groups and fisherman, and expanding research in marine environments.

The Challenge

While in dry dock for routine maintenance at the North Charleston, SC port, IMC was contracted by Detyens Shipyards to clean every interior surface of the ship within a tight time frame of ten straight days.

The hull of Nancy Foster is 186 feet long with a beam of 40 feet and a draft of 12 feet 10 inches. The ship has a total of 39 bunk spaces. She carries a complement of 6 NOAA Corps officers, 15 crew including 3 licensed engineers, and up to 17 visiting scientists.

The Solution

IMC staff rose to the challenge, enjoying a brief respite of a cold Philadelphia winter to travel to South Carolina from January 19 to January 30, working ten-hour shifts straight through Tuesday to the following Thursday.  Project Manager John Pavlosky started off the group and then Foreman David Kwiatkowski took over to manage technicians Leonard Johnson, Derrick Drinks, Marquis Choice, and Wilson Teewia in successfully completing the job and getting the Nancy Foster ready to get back out to sea!
